Lotte Nielsen is a visual artist who lives and works in Copenhagen, Denmark. She is educated in London, she holds a BA (Art Practice) from Goldsmiths, University of London, and MA (Moving Image) from Royal College of Art. Her artistic medium is primarily video, and her practice is based on narratives that are in various ways connected to LGBTQ+-communities around the world. In her practice, she uses an experimental and poetic visual language to explore themes of identity, self-image, and the experiences of minorities.
Her approach, pulling on qualities from both documentary and art film styles, is to highlight lighting and image qualities in an aesthetic interaction with the participants and their stories rather than following a specific narrative form. The young people share their intimate stories that connect to broader social and gender issues, and the distinctive architecture and setting is almost a character in itself.
Her works have been exhibited in numerous solo exhibitions and screenings at art institutions in Europe and the United States, including the KW Institute of Contemporary Art, Martin-Gropius-Bau, and Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin, Nikolaj Kunsthal, Charlottenborg Kunsthal, Kunsten in Aalborg, and GL Strand in Denmark (Winner of Extract – Young Art Prize - 2017), SALT in Istanbul, Whitechapel Gallery and Flowers Gallery in London, Southampton Gallery and the Watermill Center in the United States. In addition, her films have been screened at film festivals such as CPH:DOX in Denmark and Kasseler Dokfest in Germany.

Lotte Nielsen's atmospheric films about the experiences of queer youth around the world eloquently express the duality of their experiences: the community and the loneliness, the fear and the love. They are both heart wrenching and anxiety producing - in the best ways.
