YAOI Istanbul
2018 / 17 minutes / Turkish with English subtitles
YAOI Istanbul follows a group of young LGBTQ+ students from Boğaziçi University in Istanbul. In an old, dilapidated house—serving as a kind of "safe space"—they gather for a weekend. Here, they can speak freely, express their frustrations, share their experiences, discuss family relationships, and voice their concerns about the political situation in Turkey, which remains deeply troubling.
Shortly before filming, the university’s dean was dismissed by Erdoğan’s LGBTQ+-critical government and replaced with a pro-government dean who was highly skeptical of the LGBTQ+ club, of which all the cast members in the film were part.
